Farm to Daily Table
Imagine growing your own food on a farm, and then seeing the fruits of your labors for sale in your home community. That’s the experience we get to give students, thanks to our partnership with The Farm School, a non-profit organization on a mission to connect people to the land.
The Farm School works with various schools in the Greater Boston area, especially in Dorchester and Roxbury. They host students overnight and have summer programs for immersive farm training.
Daily Table’s partnership with The Farm School sprouted from their initiative to get their food directly to the students’ families involved in their programs. Since many of their students live in Roxbury and Dorchester, they reached out to see if we could stock our shelves with some of their fresh fruits and vegetables! And, of course, Daily Table was thrilled to partner with them. The great thing about this connection is that students can walk into their local grocery store and see the payoff from their hard work.
“I’m not only talking about the veggies,” Kristen, The Farm School’s Vegetable Operation Coordinator, says, “but we also raise our own meat, milk, and eggs. The kids do all the animal care and forestry work.”
As Kristen described, students have the unique experience of learning about the whole operation: “They do all the transplanting of the plants into the ground, move sandbags, and cover the plants with giant tarps to protect them from bugs. They’re really involved in every single step of the process of growing the food. And then they eat it in the kitchen here.”
The Farm School is able to sell their items to us at a reduced price. Plus, customers who shop with SNAP get all this produce for 50% off. We’re excited to watch this partnership continue to grow and evolve.
A partnership that provides value to both organizations and allows us to bring fresh, local, organically-grown food to our customers is a win-win-win. Keep an eye out for these delicious items in our Roxbury and Dorchester locations!
