Daily Table Grocery Store Addresses Food Insecurity As Holidays Approach
Daily Table and the Highland Street Foundation provide customers with $15 of free fruits and vegetables
BOSTON, MA — Daily Table, a Boston-based nonprofit grocery store chain, helped kick off the holiday season with a focus on improving healthy food access for communities in need. On Tuesday, November 22, thanks to generous support from the Newton-based Highland Street Foundation, Daily Table stores in Central Square, Dorchester, and Roxbury provided $27,000 of free fruits and vegetables to nearly 2,000 people in Greater Boston. The extra fruits and vegetables will help residents set a healthy meal on their Thanksgiving tables this holiday season.
Daily Table first partnered with the Highland Street Foundation to host 'Free Produce Day' in 2020. The promotion has grown each year, evolving into a community event that provides increased access to fruits and vegetables. Daily Table currently has three locations in Cambridge’s Central Square, Dorchester’s Codman Square, and Roxbury’s Nubian Square, and stores under construction in Mattapan and Salem, opening in early 2023. A basket of groceries at Daily Table costs an average of 30% less than other local supermarkets.
“By providing free fruits and vegetables to our communities, we are furthering our mission to provide healthy, affordable food for all,” said Doug Rauch, Daily Table Founder and President. “Increasing inflation, rising food prices, and declining wages are affecting millions of households. Families are struggling to put fresh food on the table. Free Produce Day is a step toward alleviating this need and bringing a renewed sense of urgency to the issue. We are so grateful to Highland Street Foundation for this partnership.”
Everything edible in Daily Table stores is eligible to be used with benefits from the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP, formerly known as food stamps). In addition to receiving already low prices, customers who purchase fresh fruits and vegetables with their SNAP benefits receive an additional 50% off. This discount can be combined with the $15 ‘Free Produce Day’ offer to further help those in need.
“We are proud to partner with Daily Table to support communities in need,” said Blake Jordan, Highland Street Foundation Executive Director. “With food prices still high, we hope this initiative eases a bit of the burden so families can enjoy a healthy, delicious meal together to kick off the holiday season.
Events like ‘Free Produce Day’ mean that Daily Table can further meet the needs of the community and help our neighbors enjoy the holiday festivities this year as they usually do, despite inflationary pressures.
