Daily Table Announces Return of Program to Address Food Insecurity

BOSTON, MA – Boston, MA – December 7, 2024 – Daily Table, a local non-profit grocery store, today announced the return of a program aimed at addressing the escalating issue of food insecurity in the region. Starting Saturday December 7, customers using SNAP benefits at Daily Table’s Boston and Salem locations will once again be able to purchase fresh fruits and vegetables at 50% off, up to a $5 discount per day. The Double Up Food Bucks initiative is made possible with support from the City of Boston’s Office of Food Justice and its USDA Gus Schumacher Nutrition Incentive Program Grant, the City of Cambridge, the Ajana Family Foundation.

“Daily Table is committed to addressing the challenges of food insecurity and the need for better nutrition,” said Sasha Purpura, CEO at Daily Table. “The return of Double Up Food Bucks demonstrates the impact of community support in helping families access fresh, wholesome food. Together, we’re making healthy eating affordable, especially during the holidays.”

The Double Up Food Bucks program is designed to help families stretch their grocery budgets while making nutritious food choices more accessible. Since its launch in 2018 in partnership with the City of Boston, the Double Up Food Bucks program at Daily Table has significantly improved access to fresh fruits and vegetables for low-income families.

A Tufts University study highlighted the program's impact, showing that SNAP incentives like Double Up Food Bucks increased fresh produce purchases by 27%. Since 2018, the program has provided almost $2 million in discounts, benefiting thousands of households, and contributing to healthier outcomes for families across Massachusetts.

“We are grateful for Daily Table’s decade of leadership in ensuring affordable access to healthy, fresh food and regionally-sourced produce to neighborhoods in Boston with some of the highest rates of food insecurity.” said Aliza Wasserman, Director, City of Boston’s Office of Food Justice. “Ensuring that Boston Double Up Food Bucks is available to residents into the future is a critical way to support our local food systems and create a healthier future for Boston families.”

At its Cambridge store location, SNAP customers will continue to enjoy the program with an expanded $10 daily discount limit, made possible through funding from the City of Cambridge.

Daily Table remains steadfast in its mission to combat food insecurity and create healthier, more resilient communities by ensuring that nutritious food is available to all. The return of Double Up Food Bucks is a testament to the power of government partnerships and community support in addressing critical food access issues.
