Meet Ruby, Mattapan’s Mural Artist!

One of the first things people will notice at the new Daily Table in Mattapan is the artwork. The store has four bright, fun, beautiful murals, all designed and painted by graphic artist Ruby Rose. All the murals reflect, as Ruby says, “Daily Table’s fun, bright style.” She describes the project, “bringing characters to life, interacting with fruit and veggies and parading around. I hope it’ll get people excited about the fresh food they’re buying.”

Ruby says she tried to make sure the characters in her murals reflect the people who live in the neighborhood. “In one of the murals, characters are holding flags from some of the countries where people in Mattapan come from. We made sure there are messages about healthy eating in Haitian Creole, Spanish, and English. And one of the designs includes Mattapan landmarks like statues, historic organizations–and of course, the Mattapan trolley!”

Ruby grew up in Boston and Jamaica Plain, and in high school, she was part of the City of Boston Mayor’s Mural Crew for five summers. “I actually painted a mural in Mattapan, right around the corner from here, so it feels really cool to come full circle. And I was a City Year core member at Mattapan’s Charles Taylor Elementary School–so I’m really excited about the idea of my old students coming to the store and seeing the imagery and getting excited about the fresh fruits and vegetables they can get here!”
